Growing up without a father can be hard and devastating, but with a strong mother like mine, who would go through anything to make sure I succeed, I knew I could be successful. I came to Colorado in and joined CCA.

Managing Your Time and Study Environment

I received full support from CCA to ensure I flourished as a student. All the staff want to see you succeed and are willing to work with you, especially my favorite instructor Kate Noon-Ulvila.

She is like my college mother; she taught me so many things. She reassured me when I told her I wanted to become a teacher just like her. After graduation, I want to become an art teacher and have my own institute to work with youths to keep them off the street.

I want to thank my lord and savior, Jesus Christ; my mother, and my uncle Tadesse Yohannes, for being supportive throughout all my education. I also what to thank my advisor Erik Clark, he inspired me to believe I can do anything and helped to raise my confidence.

Tips for Working While Going to College

Angel Avalos Prior to attending the Community College of Aurora, I was working in the construction field, installing pipe for new residential homes. It was a very tough job but the financial security kept me working. I knew I would not be able to work in construction all my life.

I decided that I wanted to change my life and do something I love. This is what drove me to attend CCA and get a degree. Anything is possible in life when you are determined to succeed. I could not have accomplished what I have done so far without my family.

I would also like to thank Gregory Atencio for helping me in my academic studies. I have a sponsorship with Bobcat of the Rockies and plan to work there after I graduate from school. I look forward to starting my career as a diesel technician.

Toisaun Bennett I am attending the Community College of Aurora to be a nurse, so that one day I will be able to provide a better life for myself and my family. Like many other students at CCA, I face several obstacles to completing my education: I am the oldest of five children, and I am the first in my family to attend college.

Finding a balance between work and studying is difficult. I decided to start taking classes at CCA this fall because I wanted a smaller community that would provide support but also a place where I could learn to be independent at my own pace.

Recently, I was struggling in class and Richard Niemeyer gave me some words of wisdom that encouraged me to stay in school.I didn’t work during the school year in high school, but I did work during the summers (2 internships with elected officials – one paid by a nonprofit foundation, one unpaid), and the summer between high school and college I worked retail for $ an hour.

Because of Bowdoin's GWS's program I've decided to pursue my Masters in Women's History at Sarah Lawrence College, and I hope to someday earn my Ph.D so that I can become a professor of Gender and Women's Studies someday.
